Marc’s Happening Birthday Party at Fenix Room
So we celebrated Marc’s birthday party at Fenix Room on Saturday night. I brought the E-M1 down to see how it would perform in a dark setting punctuated with harsh, strobe lighting. All this considered, I am quite pleased with how the photos came out, particularly as I was shooting at ISOs levels in the 3000-5000 range! Post-production was minimal, with the only necessary adjustments being increasing luminescence (noise reduction) by about 10-15%. I was particularly happy with how well the Panasonic Leica lens interprets contrast lighting; it really shows!
The only difficulty I experienced early on was that the camera struggled with AF-acquisition in extremely dim lighting (ok, to be honest I experienced two problems – the other being trying to take photos whilst getting consistently more inebriated throughout the night!). This really wasn’t much of an issue as I was shooting in manual most of the night. Based on the reviews I’ve read so far, the E-M1’s AF in low light is actually supposed to be spectacular so I am guessing it might be the fact that I was using a Panasonic Leica lens rather than Olympus’ own in-house glass. We shall see.
Admittedly, not all images are tack sharp – some of them are even downright blurred. But a blurred photo is better than no photo at all right? And without sounding like I am making excuses, I think a more accurate gauge as to the quality of a photo lies in the emotional response it evokes from the viewer, rather than the sharpness of it. It sounds basic, but I have to remind myself of that fact.
